The most spectacular:The ostrich.
Ostrich leg is a small skin that starts at the knee joint and ends up at its toe. This structure being very ethnic and rigid not all complicated products can be envisaged. The widest part of the skin near the knee bears flat scales in its middle.
Lower down these scales start curling up to allow flexibility.
As the general rule we can manufacture only two products per leg:one with the well jointed scales, the other with the ones curling up on their borders. Both aspects are of interest. Accepting both avoids wasting a lot of skin.
Experience has shown that the scales are in no way fragile.
They do not tear, but become suppler with use.
The animal being very susceptible to scratches or accidents in this part of its body, only a very small percentage of the skins are absolutely no natural fault. It is,therefore, necessary that our customers should accept some small scars or "natural flaws" on the skins.
Generally, the central parts are quite smooth, the natural flaw being a little more visible on the edges.
Tanning ostrich legs is a very delicate and complex process.Colour shades are never totally identical from one batch to the other so some little variations must be accepted.
As regards maintenance, the only way to look after items is to apply bee wax regularly or synthetic waxes such as those used for car seats.
